FAQs
How do you clean the backs of stud earrings?
- Wash your hands first.
- Take the studs out and separate the posts and backs.
- Soak the backs in warm water with a tiny drop of mild dish soap for 5–10 minutes.
- Gently scrub with a soft toothbrush or cotton bud, focusing on the inside of the butterfly back where build-up collects.
- Rinse well with clean water, then pat dry with a lint-free cloth.
- Wipe the post and the inside of the back with a little isopropyl alcohol on a cotton pad, then let it air dry.
Avoid harsh cleaners, toothpaste, and anything abrasive as they can dull plating and scratch softer stones.
How do you tighten the backs of stud earrings?
First, check what’s loose. Is it the butterfly back or the post?
- If the butterfly back feels loose:
- Hold it with a tissue for grip.
- Look at the two wings (the side loops).
- Gently pinch the wings closer together.
- Slide it back on and test the grip. Repeat if needed.
If the post feels loose inside the back:
- Try a new pair of backs.
- If the post is bent, don’t force it straight repeatedly as it can weaken and snap. Ask a jeweller to correct it.
Are stud earrings good for a first-time piercing?
Yes, studs are good for your first earlobe or cartilage piercing because they:
- Sit flat and don’t swing around
- Snag less on hair and clothing
- Put less pressure on a fresh piercing than hoops or drops
How do you select your first studs?
- Choose a simple, lightweight stud with a smooth texture.
- Make sure the post length suits your ear so it isn’t tight or digging in.
- For a brand-new piercing, follow your piercer’s aftercare and don't swap jewellery early.
