Materials

Sterling Silver

In our designs, we use 925 sterling silver, which contains 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% other alloys usually copper. It’s a precious metal that is highly durable and designed for everyday wear. We use recycled sterling silver wherever possible, because how a piece is made matters as much as how it looks. Every piece is stamped 925, confirming its authenticity and silver content.

Gold Vermeil

Gold vermeil (pronounced ver-may) is not to be confused with standard gold plating. We use 18 karat gold vermeil between 2.5 and 3 microns thick, on top of a sterling silver base, meaning it’s substantially thicker than regular gold plating and significantly more durable and longer wearing. Our gold vermeil pieces carry the 925 stamp, confirming the sterling silver base beneath the gold.

Gold Filled

Gold filled is 14 karat gold mechanically bonded to a brass core using heat and pressure. The gold layer is substantially thicker than standard gold plating, which is what gives it its durability and its value. All our gold filled pieces carry the 1/20 14K hallmark, the standard marker of genuine gold filled material. With proper care, it wears beautifully for years without fading or losing its finish.

Gold Plated Sterling Silver

Gold plated sterling silver is a layer of gold applied over a sterling silver base through an electroplating process. All our gold plated pieces carry the 925 stamp confirming the sterling silver beneath. With the right care routine, it performs better than its reputation suggests and is a genuine entry point into building a gold jewellery collection at an accessible price point.

PVD Stainless Steel

PVD stainless steel is the most durable finish we offer. It uses a ceramic coating applied directly to the steel, making it significantly more resistant to wear than standard gold plating. 304 and 316L stainless steel contain nickel as part of their composition, which means we don’t claim it is nickel-free or hypoallergenic.

Our PVD stainless steel jewellery is batch tested to ensure it meets REACH Compliance.

Jewellery Care

Sterling Silver

Care: Polish regularly with a silver polishing cloth to maintain brightness. Store in an anti-tarnish pouch or airtight bag with an anti-tarnish tab when not being worn. Remove before swimming in pools or spas.

Wear over time: Sterling silver can tarnish naturally over time when not worn, but it polishes back to brightness easily with a silver polishing cloth.

18K Gold Vermeil

Care: Wipe with a soft cloth after wear. Remove before swimming, showering, or extended water contact.

Wear over time: With the right care, Gold Vermeil maintains its finish well. The sterling silver base means that if a piece does need attention over time, re-plating is always an option.

14K Gold-Filled

Care: Wipe with a soft cloth after wear. Avoid prolonged water exposure, heavy friction, and chemical contact, and remove before swimming.

Wear over time: With the right care and storage, 14K gold-filled can last for many years.

Gold-Plated Sterling Silver

Care: Wipe with a soft cloth after wear. Avoid prolonged water exposure, heavy friction, and chemical contact, and remove before showering and swimming.

Wear over time: Beautiful when new, with the understanding that the finish will change with regular use. It's best kept as a piece you rotate in and out, rather than one worn every single day. With the right care, the finish will hold up well over time and can be replated in the future.

PVD stainless steel

Care: Safe for brief water exposure and daily wear with normal care. Avoid prolonged water exposure, heavy friction, and chemical contact and remove before swimming which can affect the finish over time. Clean with a soft damp cloth and dry thoroughly.

Wear over time: While highly durable, PVD is still a coating rather than a solid metal, so heavy abrasion or harsh chemicals can strip it over time. With normal care, it holds up well through daily wear and brief water exposure, it's the most durable finish in the range.

Packaging

Every Bowerbird Jewels order arrives in branded packaging, a box or pouch depending on the piece, chosen to suit what's inside. We keep it simple and paper-based, because good jewellery doesn't need to arrive in a mountain of plastic to feel special. Your care guide is tucked in with every order, so you have everything you need to look after your pieces from the moment they arrive.

We won't make false waterproof, nickel-free, tarnish-free, or hypoallergenic claims about our metals.

Decades of experience working in the jewellery industry, backed by independent testing, confirm these claims don't hold up.

Packaging with a Conscience

Before it reaches your hands, our packaging has already made a journey of its own, starting in a forest that's cared for rather than cleared. Every box is wrapped in FSC-certified paper, traced back to responsibly managed woodlands at every stage. It's a small detail, but it matters to us that even the wrapping is worth keeping.

The Standard We Hold Ourselves To

Independently Tested & Verified

Jewellery should feel good to wear, not something that quietly costs you later. From June 2026, every production run is verified through batch testing at ISO-accredited independent laboratories, checked against EU REACH compliance standards for nickel release, lead, and cadmium. We independently test our metal alloys and the plating thickness, so what we tell you a piece is made of is exactly what's in your hands. What touches your skin should never be left to chance.

Nothing Wasted, Nothing Hidden

The standard we hold ourselves to doesn't stop with us, it follows every supplier we choose to work with. Each one is either a certified member of the Responsible Jewellery Council, independently audited on business ethics, human rights, labour, and the environment, or a SEDEX member holding an independent SMETA audit, one of the most widely used ethical trade audits in the world. A chain only holds if every link does, and that's exactly the standard we hold our suppliers to.

Our Materials & Quality

What a piece is made of, how it's plated, what it's set with, none of it should be a mystery. We describe every material in full, right down to the base metal and the plating type, so you can choose exactly what suits your skin, your lifestyle, and how you like to wear your jewellery. Every piece comes with a care guide too, written to help you treat it right from day one, so it keeps looking as good as it did when you opened the box. Because knowing how to look after something is half of what makes it last.
