Jewellery Without the Guesswork

If you've ever bought a piece that was meant to be waterproof, tarnish-free or perfect for sensitive skin and it didn't turn out that way, you're not alone. It wasn't your fault either.

Our founder has spent 30 years inside the jewellery industry, working alongside designers, manufacturers and wholesalers at a time when knowing exactly what a piece was made of was simply expected. Every metal was named, the gold content was stated and a piece was described as what it truly was. Today, it's a very different picture. New sellers are popping up everywhere, often with no real idea where their jewellery comes from or what's in it. Words like 'waterproof,' 'hypoallergenic' and '18K gold' can be copied straight from a supplier listing and put on sale the same day, with no one checking whether any of it is true.

Bowerbird Jewels is our way of bringing that old standard of transparency back. We know exactly who makes our jewellery because we've worked with the same trusted manufacturers for years. We tell you what each piece is made of, how it will wear and how to look after it, so you can buy knowing exactly what you're getting.

The Waterproof Myth

At our market stalls, one question comes up more than any other: 'Is it waterproof?' We understand why. So many people have been let down by jewellery that didn't last, and 'waterproof' feels like a promise that this time, they'll be covered.

The trouble is, that promise is part of the problem. 'Waterproof' is a marketing phrase, not a standard. There's no test behind it for jewellery, here or anywhere else. Water, sweat, chlorine and everyday products will wear any plated or coated finish over time. That's true of even the best-made gold finish, ours included. Even solid gold and sterling silver can react to some chemicals, just in a different way. When a piece sold as waterproof wears anyway, trust is broken again and the cycle starts over.

We'd rather break that cycle by telling you how each metal really behaves and how to help it last.

Proof Over Promises

Australia has no mandatory chemical standard for adult jewellery, and no standard defining words like 'waterproof,' 'hypoallergenic' or 'nickel-free'. Nobody checks these claims before a piece goes on sale. Over the past few years, there have been many news stories and regulator warnings about jewellery sold with high levels of heavy metals, or described as something it isn't.

When we introduced our PVD bonded stainless steel in 2026, we knew stainless steel contains nickel by design, so we made sure it was independently tested for nickel release. Now every production run of our sterling silver, gold vermeil, gold plated sterling silver and PVD bonded stainless steel is batch-tested by an accredited laboratory for lead, cadmium and nickel or nickel release, against the limits set in the European Union.

Nobody requires us to do this. We do it for your peace of mind, because it's what we'd want for our own family, and because trust should be earned.

Know What You're Wearing

Too often, jewellery is described in ways that are vague, incomplete or simply misleading. 'Gold' that turns out to be a thin layer of plating. A base metal that's never named. A finish with no word on how it will wear. It leaves you guessing and too often disappointed.

There's no single 'best' metal. There's only the right one for you, depending on how you live, how often you'll wear it and what you'd like to spend.

That's why we explain every metal and finish in plain language: what's on the surface, what's underneath and what to expect as it wears. Then the choice is yours, made with all the facts.

Honesty, Not Hype

We don't use words we can't stand behind. Take 'hypoallergenic'. It sounds reassuring, but there's no set standard behind it, so pieces sold that way can still irritate skin after a short time. The same goes for 'waterproof' and 'tarnish-free'. Instead, you'll find a clear description of exactly what each piece is made of, so you can decide what's right for your skin.

Every order comes with a care guide because a few simple habits make a real difference to how long jewellery looks its best. If you're ever unsure about anything, just ask. We'd much rather answer a question before you buy than leave you guessing afterwards.

The Experience Behind It

Bowerbird Jewels began at the markets almost a decade ago, talking to customers face to face, and that's still how we like to work: warm, straightforward and happy to explain. Our founder's experience goes back much further: 30 years inside the jewellery industry, across diamonds, precious metals, manufacturing and wholesale.

Every piece in our collection is chosen by our founder, drawing on that experience.
